Strikes - Ryanair flying into trouble

ryanairThe dominance of the Ryanair board by one spiky maverick is leading the company and its profits into uncharted territory after 400 flights had to be cancelled on Friday due to entirely avoidable industrial action.

Staff in Ireland, Germany, Sweden, Belgium and the Netherlands are staging a 24-hour strike until 3pm on Saturday over pay and conditions, leaving 74,000 passengers affected in the busiest period of the year.

The Monchique Fire of 2018 is 'dominated but not extinct'

FireOverMonchoqueStarting in the afternoon of Friday 3rd August, in a forested area to the north of the hillside town of Monchique, the Algarve's worst fire of 2018 spread rapidly through uncleared scrub and tightly packed eucalyptus forests.

Blistering heat, low humidity and gusting winds ensured the fire soon was out of control and heading for villages such as Alferce and, to the horror of the authorities, the municipal capital.

Thursday - Monchique fire update

FiremonchiquealightThe perimeter of the fire that broke out last Friday in Monchique, Algarve, already surpasses 100 kilometers and this morning 299 people remained evacuated, according to the Civil Protection Authority.

The work overnight to use earth-moving machinery to create firebreaks has paid off but the perimeter of the fire zone has spread to an estimated 100 kilometres, engaging a total of 1,500 firefighters to put out the flames.

Of the total, 1,159 people had treatments and dressings, and 244 were treated for puncture wounds and poisonous stings from Echiichthys vipera, the 'Peixe Aranha' or Lesser weaver fish.

FCO's Algarve travel warning criticised by top local official

fcoThe chairman of the Faro District Civil Protection Commission said today that "it is not good for the Algarve" that the a UK government ministry has issued a warning advising Britons not to travel to areas affected by the fires.

"We have always tried to convey the idea that the Algarve continues to be and is a safe destination and that there are areas of the Algarve where this fire is not happening," said Botelho.
