Albufeira hit by tornado

A tornado hit the centre of Albufeira early this morning, damaging vehicles and street furniture and uprooting trees.

This is the third tornado to hit the region this year with one of the two in March destroying a Roma camp but giving the President of the Republic an opportunity to kiss babies and assure the Roma community that he was not just the president for clean and scrubbed white people.

Salir landfill site leaching unspeakable liquid into local river

The incompetence if the Algarve’s waste handling company, Algar, gain has been on full display with the company admitting that untreated leachate* from the Sotavento Sanitary Landfill in Salir is polluting the Vascão river.

The Sotavento Landfill Monitoring Commission met in Loulé on Tuesday to confront Algar, the company that is meant to be managing the landfill site, as the pollution was known to be leaching into the river.

Lagoa's wetland nature site subject to full government review

The Save Alagoas Brancas protest group, that so stridently has stood up for nature in the face of more concrete and steel, is getting serious recognition with the government publishing news of what needs to happen next to protect the Lagoa freshwater site.

Two resolutions, both been approved by Portugal’s parliament, have been published in Diário da República – most importantly, the safeguarding of the ‘Alagoas Brancas’ wetland in Lagoa, is recommended.

Turismo do Algarve launches new look website

According to the tourist board, "the new promotional portal now presents a contemporary and appealing image with dynamic content and intuitive navigation."

Mayor to mount protests as government has lied over EN125 roadworks

Francisco Amaral says he is "highly indignant" at the state of the EN125 between Olhão and Vila Real de Santo António, as it affects the Castro Marim council area which he is in charge of.

At the beginning of March, the mayor told the local news service Algarve Primeiro that he was thinking of calling the president, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, to ask him to get the roadworks started as the current lack of effort from the government represents “a profound lack of respect for the Algarve, the Portuguese and all those who visit us."

Faro's wine and cheese fair in the Manuel Bivar Gardens

Faro’s parishes are putting the finishing touches to the 2018 Cheese and Wine Fair that will take place from 19 to 22 April in the Manuel Bivar Gardens, in the regional capital.

The event will enable "visitors to deepen their knowledge in an area of great strategic interest for the economy of our country, one that needs to be valued and promoted, strengthening the territorial cohesion and importance of endogenous products in the economy, tradition and Portuguese identity.”

Ryanair crews 'are very well paid' claims O'Leary

Ryanair’s Executive Chairman has threatened the National Union of Civil Aviation Flight Personnel with court, complaining of "false allegations."

The workers’ union thinks this a capital idea, “I think it's very good that we're all going to court settle this problem together. I think it was a very good idea and we are prepared for it, for sure," said Luciana Passo.

Lisbon bridge - rail traffic to be reduced on safety grounds

The country’s top engineer has assured the public that Lisbon’s 25th of April Bridge is not in danger of collapse. However, if repair work is not completed soon, rail traffic will have to be reduced.

Carlos Pina, the President of the National Institute of Civil Engineering, (LNEC) was reporting to the Parliamentary Committee on Economy and Public Works after a request from the CDS-PP, the PCP and the PSD, on a report on the need for repairs to the bridge which are scheduled to take one year to start and over two years to complete.
