Government plans to scrap Faro airport rail link

trainThe government is planning to drop the upgrade work planned for the Algarve’s railway line in its new version of the Strategic Plan for Transport and Investment (PETI), a document revised and submitted by Infraestruturas de Portugal to the detriment of the Algarve.

The company quotes cost savings from the scrapping of the electrification of the line between Vila Real de Santo António and Lagos and the abandonment of the Faro airport rail link. 

Full inquiry launched into fatal delay for Faro stroke victim

nurseThe General Inspectorate of Health Activities (IGAS) is monitoring the investigation set up by the Central Hospital of the Algarve’s management  to determine the circumstances surrounding the death of Faro patient Sr Sebastião Pereira.

The patient had suffered a stroke at Faro Hospital and was transferred to Hospital São José in Lisbon which refused to admit him.

The heavy rain, which caused minor flooding in Albufeira on Monday evening, has not affected the council’s preparations for the massive New Year's Eve party at which tens of thousands of tourists are expected.

Drones set to monitor lynx

lynx2Drones will be put to use to track the Iberian lynx, the world’s most endangered cat, as part of the efforts to re-establish the species in the wild.

Conservationists hope the use of drone technology will eventually replace the need for the lynx to wear radio devices on collars.

The Quercus environmental audit 2015-2016 fails to mention oil threat

oilrigEnvironmental organisation Quercus has reviewed the best and the worst environmental aspects of 2015 and presents the prospects for the year 2016, while mysteriously avoiding the subject of oil and gas exploration in the Algarve.

The worst environmental aspects for Portugal in 2015 include pollution discharges in the Tagus river, unfeasible municipal waste recycling targets in PERSU2020, the adverse impacts of the new afforestation scheme which increases new eucalyptus plantations at the expense of native forest, laws that enable potential polluters to avoid environmental impact assessments and the general slack standards employed by government to control polluters.
