Lagoa's Fatacil 2015 - the recession is over, the party starts here

lagoaLagoa council says it is committed to bringing back the soul to Fatacil* at the 36th edition of the exhibition and music festival which in recent years has been allowed to slide into deficit and indifference.

The fair this year (21 to 30 August) is hosting about 700 exhibitors, of which half are new to the venue and all aim to represent the best the Algarve offers in the categories of  handicraft, tourism, agriculture, trade and industry.

Sócrates' apartment seized by Finanças

ruabraamcampJosé Sócrates' rather fine Lisbon apartment, valued at around €300,000, has been seized by Finanças over an unpaid tax bill.

The former PM, still in jail in Évora pending charges of money laundering, tax fraud and corruption, managed in January to secure a €250,000 mortgage on the property, courtesy of Caixa Geral de Depósitos, but the apartment soon will be auctioned off if the debt around €5,800 is not settled.

French ferries held captive by workers

Quercus to remove Gold Quality flag at 'artificial' Dona Ana beach

donaanaQuercus, the 'Gold Quality' awarding body for Portugal’s beaches now is questioning the Gold status for three beaches about which complaints have been made - in the Algarve the beach in question is Dona Ana in the Lagos council area.

The president of Quercus says that work done by the government at one of the Algarve most internationally recognisable beaches means that the prestigious award will be removed.

Carlos Costa, the governor of the Bank of Portugal seems happy to continue to reject any offers designed to resolve the depositors' issue until Novo Banco is sold off at which point he can retreat into the obscurity from which he emerged.
