Lisbon stock hit by Greek uncertainty

lisbon2Portugal’s PSI120 stock index closed 5.22% down this afternoon at 5,530.50 points in a Europe-wide reaction to uncertainty in Greece.

Portugal’s main index performed the worst among its European peers all of which ended the day sharply lower with losses varying between 1.97% in London, 4.56% in Madrid - even Frankfurt was down 3%.

Greek voters to decide their country's fate

greekbankThe European Commission has offered Greek voters a 10-point bailout plan and has urged them to vote to remain in the euro zone in a referendum to be held on July 5th.

Greece’s Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras announced on Friday that he would go to the people as Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker works on finalising the ten-point plan before a press conference to be held on Monday.

Immigration checks put on landlords in England

londonhouseLandlords renting out property in England will be obliged soon to monitor the immigration status of tenants or lodgers.

The “right to rent” obligation comes with a fine up to £3,000 for failure to comply. Penalties are issued per tenant living in a property who has no right to rent.

First Aid posts for 32 of the Algarve's top beaches

beach feetThe setting up of summer first aid posts was such a success last year that the Regional Health Administration again is running the scheme.

32 of the Algarve region’s beaches will have first aid posts from this Monday June 29th to the end of August, from 10:30 to 19:30, although at seven very popular beaches the service will run until 13 September.

Argentina tries to grab oil companies’ assets

falklandsWith the scent of oil hanging heavy in the atmosphere, a judge in Argentina has ordered that assets be seized from five foreign firms drilling near the Falkland Islands (pictured).

Lilian Herraez, a federal judge in Tierra del Fuego, ordered the seizure of $156 million, boats and other property, as reported by Argentina's state news agency Telam.  She said the companies did not have the required permissions from Buenos Aires in order to explore.

Fake 'extra virgin' olive oil seized in Faro warehouse

olivesThe Food Safety Authority has seized 1,070 litres of adulterated olive oil being sold in Portugal as high priced 'extra virgin.'

The Golden Oil operation aimed to stop the production and marketing of the adulterated oil and was triggered by a discovery at a Faro distributor whose olive oil stock was nothing of the sort.

EU "attack" on mozzarella

Fresh milk from domestic water buffalo is the traditional ingredient.

Finanças seize breaded prawns and a waiter

financaslogoThe poorly thought out seizure of goods identified by ‘goods in transit’ documents continues to amuse and baffle in equal measure as a lunch delivery from a restaurant to a business customer has been targeted by the taxman.

A corporate lunch of 'breaded prawns with orange sauce, green salad, cod gratin with spinach and cheesecake with red fruit coulis, plus complimentary bread rolls' has been listed by the taxman, along with the waiter as there was a ‘delivery charge within the Lisbon area.’
