Italy could 'wound' Europe by changing immigration policy

It has called for a change in the asylum rules.  The Dublin regulations stipulate that most asylum seekers must stay in the first country they reach.

Efromovich claims TAP sale may be illegal

efromovichTwo time loser Germán Efromovich, who last week failed in his bid for control of Portugal’s state airline TAP, is to demand access to all the documentation related to the winning proposal.

Efromovich, whose Synergy bid vehicle failed to secure the TAP shares on offer, wants to assess whether he has grounds to take action against the government in time to prevent the sale of TAP to David Neeleman’s Gateway partnership.

Cristina de Borbón, 49, is no longer the Duchess of Palma de Majorca, despite the fact that her trial for two counts of tax fraud has not yet taken place. It is not expected to begin until later this year.

Algarve policing boost for summertime safety

bikersMore than 500 extra Public Security Police, GNR soldiers and border police will be operating in the Algarve this summer season, from June 15th to September 15th. There will be an increase of 190 GNR on duty at any one time.

The operation was announced yesterday by the Minister of Internal Affairs, Anabela Rodrigues, who said that she is providing, "214 GNR soldiers, 294 men and women of the Public Security Police and 11 members of the Foreigners and Borders Service."

IMF still saddened by Portugal's performance

imfThe International Monetary Fund may never be satisfied and today warned that for Portugal "there is a real risk that the target budget deficit of 2.7% of GDP will not be met without further cuts in spending," adding that it is unlikely that Portugal’s austerity measures can be eased without containing spending on wages and pensions.

The statement follows the second post-Troika visit and highlights that which the government already knows but will not attempt due to the Autumn elections.

Spain opens up dual nationality to Sephardic descendants

The ruling conservative government had said it was an “historic mistake” to force its Jewish population into exile in 1492, making them convert to Catholicism or face torture and death by burning at the stake.
