Fugitive British author C.A.R. Hills back in jail

Originally sentenced at the Old Bailey in London to seven years imprisonment but released after serving only two and a half, the British writer broke the terms of his parole licence and absconded.

Germany slides into deflation

FACTORYmERCGermany has become the latest eurozone country to spiral down into deflation, joining its fellow euro area partners.

Inflation fell below zero for the first time since October 2009 with prices dropping by 0.3% in the year to January, according to preliminary estimates from the German statistics agency Destatis.

Action group sues Bank of Portugal Governor

bop3The Bank of Portugal governor Carlos Costa, and the Portuguese state are being sued for gross negligence over the BES affair as, investors allege, they knew the bank was in a parlous financial state, yet exhorted the public to continue to invest in BES shares and bonds.

To add insult to financial losses the Bank of Portugal slyly told institutional investors to offload investments in BES while encouraging private investors to pile in as all was safe and secure.

Portuguese fisherman among those lost at sea off Dover

trawlerA Portuguese fisherman and three other crew went missing on Wednesday in the English Channel off Dover with no sign of their trawler, the Z85 Morgenster.

Satellite communications were lost and the trawler on which the men worked is thought to have sunk.
