Águas do Algarve invests €2 million in Algoz and Tunes

sewagepipeRegional water company Águas do Algarve today announced an investment of €2 million to link up Algoz and Tunes in the Silves council area to the more modern Wastewater Treatment System that deals with sewage from Albufeira, Lagoa and Silves.

With the completion of this work the waste treatment station in Algoz can be decommissioned. Just as well as even the water company admits the plant does not work well and that staff frequently discharge waste that has not been treated properly, resulting in environmental problems.

Presidential train arrives in Faro 125 years later

railwayclockThe ceremonial train used by heads of state from 1910 onwards is to travel between Vila Real de Santo António and Faro on July 1st to mark the 125th anniversary of the arrival of the railway line to Faro.

The initiative is part of a series of trips planned by the National Railway Museum. The Algarve event is in collaboration with Faro and Vila Real de Santo António councils which have arranged celebrations to mark the first passenger train that arrived in Faro on July 1st 1889.

Oil exploration threat to Ibiza triggers indignation

The island and its surrounding waters enjoy UN world heritage status because of their ecological and cultural importance.

Government fails final Troika review

alberquerquePortugal's Minister of Finance, Maria Luís Albuquerque, (pictured) has confirmed that the government has decided not to ask for an extension to the bailout programme, preferring to forego the final €2.6 billion of money due under the agreed schedule.

After the Constitutional Court rejected three key government cost saving measures in the 2014 Budget ministers decided not to submit any alternative measures to fill the + €600 million funding gap as these too may be kicked out by the Constitutional Court and time is running out.

Briton dies in Arade dam accident

aradedamA British holidaymaker died of her injuries having fallen down a well in a restricted area at the Arade dam near Silves.

The tourist entered a fenced-off area so as to take a better photograph and stood on a metal well covering which gave way.

Algarve - Alferce fire extinguished within two hours

bombeirosFire raged through the Alferce countryside near Monchique, today engaging 64 firefighters and 17 support vehicles in suppressing the flames which were fanned by a medium strength afternoon breeze.  

The fire started at around 3pm and an hour later a water carrying helicopter was in support of ground teams.

Fake Finanças email invites taxpayers to pay up

financaslogoThe latest message purporting to come from Portugal’s Tax and Customs Authority in fact install malicious software if opened.

The government authority admits the alert has been sent out in its name inviting people to pay up now to avoid publication in the national List of Debtors, when in fact the email if acted on installs malicious software.
