Another London stabbing leaves Portuguese man dead

MendesStabbingPortuguese national, Wilham Mendes, 25, died after being stabbed several times during a robbery on Saturday. His identity was revealed on Monday night.

Mendes, an amateur boxer, was attacked in a crowded alleyway on Saturday morning and was found shortly after one o'clock on December 22nd, at Albert Place, in Tottenham where he lived - he had several stab wounds.

"Insatiable greed" - Pope sets the agenda for Christmas Day address

popefrancisIn a Christmas Eve address that set the tone for Christmas, Pope Francis last night exhorted his flock to avoid the greed and materialism of Christmas and to focus on simplicity, charity and love.

The Pontiff celebrated Christmas Eve Mass in St. Peter's Basilica, as is traditional, and this year lamented the poison of avarice greed that runs through human veins, “An insatiable greed marks all human history, even today, when paradoxically a few dine luxuriantly while all too many go without the daily bread needed to survive."

Pope's Christmas address calls for an end to conflict in Syria and Yemen

Pope Francis has urged people to overcome their religious and cultural differences and end conflict in Syria, Yemen and in other Middle East hot-spots.

Delivering his sixth Urbi et Orbi address to a crowd of 50,000 people in Saint Peter’s Square, the Pope said, “My wish for a happy Christmas is a wish for fraternity, all of us are brothers and sisters in humanity.”

Altice USA faces class action over securities fraud allegations

This legal move follows investigations to see whether Altice and certain of its officers and directors have engaged in securities fraud and other unlawful business practices. 

Sicily - Mount Etna erupts

etnaEruptsSicily's Mount Etna erupted on Monday with more than 130 earthquakes registered of up to 4.0 in magnitude, according to Italy's INGV volcanology institute.

Lava is spewing from a fracture near its south-eastern crater in the volcano's first serious eruption in over a decade. The biggest tremor was on the north-east side of the volcano, near Piano Pernicana, with another on the northern flank with intense eruptions from a new crater on the south-east side.

Mayor blasts Minister over Faro Hospital's Christmas staffing levels

nurseFaro Council’s mayor has launched a blistering Christmas attack on the government’s health provision in the Algarve, blaming the minister of failing to ensure sufficient medical staff, especially in the Gynecology and Obstetrics departments which may have to be shut down, albeit temporarily.

An emailed message was sent from Faro Council to the Minister of Health, Marta Temido, in which Mayor Rogério Bacalhau expressed his concern about the neonatal unit over the Christmas period.

President thinks of Portugal's 1.8 million poor this Christmas

belemThe president of Caritas, the Catholic Church's charity, claims that 18.3% of the Portuguese live in poverty and called on the Portuguese to put a candle in the window of their homes on Monday from 8:00 p.m. in recognition of this fact.

After a ceremony at the Palace of Belém on Sunday, Portugal’s President received the "Light of Peace" candle that symbolises peace, love and solidarity, handed to him by Caritas.

Strikes - delays predicted at Portugal's airports

LisbonAirportPortugal’s airports operator, the French-owned company, ANA, has asks passengers to arrive two to three hours before their scheduled flight time at Lisbon airport over the Christmas holiday period.

ANA issued the warning to passengers, explaining that, "the holiday season is traditionally a period of peak traffic at Portuguese airports, namely at Humberto Delgado Airport in Lisbon," while not alluding to the planned strikes affecting services.
