The Lisbon Criminal Court of Appeal has rejected the request for the suspension of the 'Galpgate' case, the one involving three former secretaries of state, Fernando Rocha Andrade, João Vasconcelos and Jorge Costa Oliveira and the former adviser to the Prime Minister, Vitoria Escária, and others.

Lisbon tram derails and crashes with 28 on board

LisbonTram2One of Lisbon’s iconic trams has derailed in the Lapa district leaving 28 injured, many of whom were trapped inside the carriage.

The derailment on Friday afternoon happened at the intersection of Rua São Domingos de Lapa and Garcia de Orta, at a steep section of track on the Campo de Ourique-Praça da Figueira, ‘number 25’ route.

Algarve road deaths - worst year for a decade

The figures from the Road Safety Authority show that, although the safety record has improved over past decades, there have been 1,163 road traffic accident deaths since the beginning of the millennium.

The Police caught one ringleader, a 34-year-old Portuguese man who already has served time for violent and serious crimes. He has been remanded in custody until his trial.

Montechoro fatal stabbing - man arrested

inemThe Police have executed a warrant and arrested a 21-year-old unemployed man on suspicion of the fatal stabbing of a Cape Verdean at a popular bar in Montechoro, Albufeira.

According to the Police statement, "the crime occurred inside a night-time entertainment establishment (the Chor Bar) at dawn last Sunday."

Silves lynx come back home from Spain

lynx2The remaining lynx, of the 29 taken to Spain as the Monchique fire advanced on the reproduction centre in Silves, are returning to the Algarve.

Rodrigo Serra, director of the National Centre for Reproduction of the Iberian Lynx, located near the Arade Dam, said he expects to receive the remaining lynx by the end of this week as the repair work to fire damaged areas has been completed.
