New ID card issued to foreign residents

SEFOn January 9th, Portugal’s Immigration and Borders Service (SEF) started issuing the new 'Permanent Residence Certificate of the European Union.'

This new card is identical to the national Citizen's Card in format, material and contents which contains the physical security data internationally recommended for this type of document.

Government allows Real Estate Investment Trusts to operate in Portugal

freeport2Portugal's government finally has given the go-ahead to the creation of Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs) in Portugal.

The decree-law was approved on Thursday, January 10th, by the Council of Ministers, so does not need to go through Parliament but will head directly to the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, who is unlikely to knock it back.

Bank balances of €50k or more to be reported to the Tax Authority

eurozoneParliament today approved a law that obliges banks to tell the tax man which of their customers have a balance of €50,000 or more.

The legislation obliges banks to report this private information to the Tax and Customs Authority by July 31, relating to balances held at the previous year-end.

Social Democrat, Amaral, said on Tuesday that he is resigning in early February and will hold mid-term Council elections in April on the grounds that he can’t get anything done as Councillors from the Socialist Party and the independent Castro Marim First movement, block everything he tries to implement.

Irish climber airlifted to Faro Hospital with spinal injuries
