The ghost of Franco stirs as far-right gains power in Andalucía

spanishflagFar-right politics has gained a firm foothold in the Spanish region of Andalucía with the Vox party winning 12 seats in the regional parliamentary elections.

The Socialists remain in power, taking 33 of the 109 seats, but have been dealt a body blow by the upstart far right that has been campaigning against Catalan independence, immigration and abortion.

Explosions heard just hours before Borba quarry collapse

BorbaQuarry2The Judicial Police  is investigating the possibility of explosive detonations at the Borba quarry, just hours before the accident on November 19th, when a public road collapsed, killing five people.

The investigators have interviewed several witnesses who say they heard at least two detonations before a section of the EN225 gave way.

President collects for Food Bank, "anyone who is privileged has to give more"

FoodBankBagYet again, Portugal’s President hits the note that politicians fail to reach.  Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa fills not one, but two shopping carts with food items for this weekend’s Food Bank collection while effortlessly coming up with the sort of soundbite that would sound insincere from anyone but himself.

“I have more obligation because I am privileged,” said our leader, while encouraging others to follow his example as an obligation, not as a favour.

Two crushed to death by lorry in Portimão

INEM125A couple died in a road traffic accident on Friday morning on the EN124 near the Portimão A22 motorway junction.

The accident happened at 11:00am and involved a car being crushed by a truck as it overturned on the roundabout.

Unemployment rate lowest since 2002

FactoryShoeThe National Statistics Institute confirmed on Thursday that the unemployment rate in Portugal fell from 6.9% in August to 6.6%, in September, the lowest since September 2002.

"In September 2018, the unemployment rate was 6.6%, down 0.3 percentage points from the previous month, down 0.2 points from three months earlier and 2.0 points less than in the same month of 2017," read the INE report.

Food Bank collection in Algarve supermarkets this weekend

FoodBankBagPortugal's Food Bank Against Hunger is launching an appeal across the nation this coming weekend, December 1st and 2nd, when 40,000 volunteers will be collecting food from customers in more than 2,000 supermarkets, 140 of them in the Algarve.
 
The campaign runs on until December 9th, on-line, (HERE) where people can donate money to help build up stocks of essentials for those that can’t afford them.

Olhão's 2019 Budget includes 'upgrading historic centre'

olhaoCentreOlhão Council has approved its 2019 Budget and plans to spend €32 million, with a focus on social housing, rubbish and upgrading the historic city centre.

As for housing, "We have an aging social housing area that is in urgent need of repair and upgrade. We have already started this but there is more to do," said Mayor António Pina.
