Spain threatens Brexit agreement over Gibraltar's status

gibraltarThe Spanish government threatens to scupper Theresa May’s proposed Brexit deal by demanding that changes are made regarding the status of Gibraltar which Spain thinks it should control, despite the territory being British.

Spain’s foreign minister said that his government would refuse to back the UK Brexit proposals unless Gibraltar was excluded. 

Weekend drivers - drunk, speeding, on the phone and uninsured

breathalizerOver last weekend, which included ‘World Day of Road Victims’ on Sunday, 149 drivers were done for drunk driving and 586 were caught speeding.

On Saturday and Sunday, the GNR detected 1,608 infractions, including excess speed, driving with a higher blood alcohol level than allowed by law, no MOT (87), lack of seat belt (49), 41 tachograph related infractions, 29 cases of driving while on the phone and 28 for lack of insurance.

Carlos Quaresma accused of €265,000 'medical equipment from Sweden' scam

6232Faro court finally has started to hear the case against Carlos Quaresma, accused of duping 30 Councils and social institutions out of €265,000 in the ‘hospital equipment from Sweden’ scam.

According to the indictment, Carlos Quaresma, was handed the money in order to pay for the transport of equipment donated in Sweden, to Portugal.

Portugal's banks back in the black

Illegal kebab meat storage - two wholesalers suspended

kebabTo the horror of late night revellers, ASAE officers have busted two kebab wholesalers in Faro that have been handling and storing frozen meat without hygiene licences - both of these distribution businesses have had to suspend trading.

ASAE reported that the businesses stored food of animal origin, aka, kebab meat, that requires a controlled temperature in a cold store but that the businesses did not have authorisations from the veterinary service which checks hygiene processes.

Algarve’s Director of Culture 'let go'

padernecastleThe Algarve’s Director of Culture, Alexandra Rodrigues Gonçalves, has been ‘let go,’ with the Secretary of State commenting to Sul Informação that the aim is to "give a new direction and dynamic to the Regional Directorate of Culture of the Algarve."

The Government will not being extending the mandate for Alexandra Gonçalves, so she will be out of a job come December 15th.

Algarve Ultra Trail - 300 kms of rough terrain - will test even the fittest runners

monchiqueFor those fancying a gentle jog through the Algarve countryside, the Ultra Trail race may prove a little too much.

Runners will set off on November 29th, hoping to finish the pan-Algarve course by December 2nd – many will not make it as the run is from Alcoutim on the Spanish-Portuguese border to Sagres, at the end of the known world.
