Quarteira fisherman dies during three hour wait for rescue

helicopterMerlin101A 74-year-old fisherman died on Thursday afternoon after the Princesa do Mira, from Quarteira, floundered and sank two miles south of Faro.

The alert was sent out and received by rescue services which did not locate the men in the water until 4.55pm, nearly three hours later, by which time one crew member had died and the other, a 55-year-old, had already been rescued by a passing French yacht.

Eco-associations demand answers to Cacela Velha tree clearance

The associations say there is a "deafening silence" over the affair which has been raised with the Institute of Nature Conservation and Forests, which you would think might take an interest, and in parliament.

No penalty for Councils which ignore stray cats and dogs law

dogStarvedThe 2016 law that prohibits Council vets continuing to kill healthy animals held in municipal kennels, comes into force this October but there are no sanctions for those Councils vets who ignore the law and carry on killing stray cats and dogs.

According to Público, local authorities have tried to buy more time but the government has not backed down - Councils have had long enough to prepare and the 2016 law will be enforced as from October 2018.

MPs vote to keep Algarve motorway tolls

parliamentPortugalA proposal presented to parliament by the Left Bloc and the Portuguese Communist Party, to abolish tolls on the Algarve’s Via do Infante motorway, was voted down during the last full session before the Summer break.

Socialist Party MPs did as they were told and voted against the proposal, except those Socialist MPs representing the Algarve who were allowed to show they care by voting for the proposal.
