Belgian scouts help clear-up Culatra Island rubbish

culatraAs part of its citizenship programme, the Association for the Study and Conservation of the Oceans has been cleaning up Culatra with the help of Scouts from Belgium.

The clear-up started in June and will carry on until the end of July with Scouts from various parts of Belgium participating in rubbish collection duties and awareness-raising.

Stand-up paddle boarders rescued off Meia Praia

meiapraiaFive, stand-up paddle boarders who set off from Meia Praia beach near Lagos, found themselves in trouble when a brisk wind and strong tide pushed them out to sea, leaving them unable to get back to shore under their own muscle power.

The region’s emergency services, as ever, are on full alert to help those in trouble and a message was received by the Maritime Police in Lagos and the Sagres rescue station that help was needed.

Culatra Telemedicine Station links locals to mainland

stethascopeThe Loulé Hospital Group has set up a Telemedicine Station on Culatra Island so locals can talk to a Doctor without waiting for a ferry.

The new Telemedicine Station is linked to an emergency service at the International Clinic of Olhão based at Ria Shopping.

Algarve hoteliers' association wants Councils to provide low-cost homes for hotel workers

HOTELRECEPTIONGALEThe Algarve’s hoteliers’ association has involved its members in a call for some social engineering by demanding that regional Councils implement, "active housing policies at controlled costs, with a view to motivating and attracting workers from other regions of the country and also immigrants from third countries."

The association considers the local shortage of labour, "in quantity and quality, as one of the biggest structural problems in the Algarve today."

TAP boss scoops award and praises workers

Tight GNR policing planned for Faro Bike Festival

gnrstopThe National Republican Guard (GNR) has issued warnings and guidelines in advance of the 37th International Motorcycle Meeting in Faro, stating that personnel will be carrying out a high-profile safety operation aimed at motorcyclists, motorists and the public visiting the event.

During this year’s festival, from the 19th to the 22nd of July, the GNR will be posted to Faro’s main A2, A22, EN125 and EN2 access routes, on roads near the airport and on Faro Island, “to ensure the safety and flow of traffic.”
