Multilingual sin relief service launched for Algarve tourists

prayerCatholics on holiday in the Algarve may have sins to confess. Help is at hand from the Church which, thoughtfully, is providing a multilingual confession service.

Sinners wishing to repent will have to travel to one of six Churches in the eastern Algarve where priests will be available to hear the faithful in a variety of languages.

French group may outbid Chinese for EDP

The largest electricity trader in Portugal closed May with a 77.5% share in the residential market. This represented the sixth month in a row in which EDP lost out to competitors with Iberdrola and Endesa gaining at EDP’s expense.

Viruses resist treatment in Portugal's sewage plants

sewagepipeWater samples taken at 14 of Portugal’s Waste Water Treatment Plants (WWTPs) shows that two viruses in particular are able to emerge in treated water which is introduced back into the pubic system.

An investigation carried out by experts from the Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Coimbra concludes that "the current methods used are not effective in removing the most resistant viruses."

Lagoa Council offers help to protect its village centre properties

lagoamap2Lagoa council, having defined and approved an 'urban rehabilitation area' in the city at the end of February, now has approved several further areas in the municipality to safeguard local heritage.

Carvoeiro, Estômbar, Ferragudo, Mexilhoeira da Carregação, Calvário, Parchal and Porches now have designated urban rehabilitation areas.

Ongoing owes Novo Banco an 'unecoverable' €440 million

Ongoing owes €440 million to Novo Banco, which was meant to inherit only the ‘good’ assets of BES, and another €230 million to BCP.

Pets allowed into restaurants as from today

DogRestaurantCompanion animals are allowed into restaurants as from today, Monday June 25th,  but the association that represents the sector reckons that not many establishments will be joining in. 

The catering and restaurants association (AHRESP) said last Friday that the lack of clarity of the law and the responsibility it can generate for owners of establishments, especially in terms of hygiene and food safety, should lead many venues continuing to ban animals from being allowed in.

Portugal needs 75,000 immigrants-a-year to boost working population

oldpersonPortugal’s Prime Minister, António Costa, says the country needs more immigrants to thwart a predicted demographic breakdown caused by an ever-ageing population.

According to figures from a 2017 study by the Francisco Manuel dos Santos Foundation, the country needs a minimum 50,000 foreigners per year to start to restore the balance between the working and non-working sectors of the population.
