Olhão commercial court to be relieved of 1,220 cases

justiceOver 1,200 commercial cases are to be removed from the overburdened court in Olhão and taken on by a new court to be established in Lagoa.
 
The new Commercial Court will be a reality as of September 1st this year and will serve the western Algarve, resolving legal disputes between companies as well as company insolvencies and individual bankruptcies.

GNR shuts down illegal e-cigarette supplier

ecigaretterefilThe Fiscal Unit of the GNR has seized 7,458 liquid nicotine refills for e-cigarettes.
 
The operation was carried out on Wednesday, March 21, following an investigation that took place about a year ago into a company that was selling the refills without paying tax. 

Faro footballer stabbing - man accused of attempted murder

inemThe man suspected of the near-fatal stabbing of one of FC Faro’s top football players has been questioned by police and remanded in custody after a brief court appearance.
 
The assault on Octávio Alexandre Leal Barros, known locally as Tavinho (Little Wolf), occurred in Vilamoura at around 05:15 on March 19th, outside the Iluminati nightclub.

Portimão council votes in support of motorway tolls

tollsPortimão council has voted on the motion "For an Algarve free of the tragedy of tolls and for the full and adequate upgrading of the EN125," presented by Left Bloc MP and local councillor, João Vasconcelos.
 
The document proposed that the council should support "the urgent elimination of toll on the Via do Infante motorway," as well as, "the urgent upgrading of the EN125, between Olhão and Vila Real de Santo António."

Tourist board's Desidério Silva wants another five year contract

Silva left his post as mayor Albufeira to lead the regional tourist agency in 2012 and, now that this first contract is coming to a close, has the support of tourism heavyweight André Jordan in support of his bid to remain in gainful employment.

Banif inquiry, Bank of Portugal governor "refused to turn up"

baniflogo2The president of the Banif Commission of Inquiry in Madeira is appalled that the governor of the Bank of Portugal, Carlos Costa, refused to turn up and give his version of a series of events that ended up costing customers €263 million.

"I express absolute repudiation for the attitude shown by those who refused to come here to give their testimony, with special emphasis on the governor of the Bank of Portugal, who, being an official of the State - and Madeira being part of the same State - refused to appear," said commission president, Carlos Rodrigues.

Councils rewarded for dumping untreated sewage

sewagepipePortugal’s main environmental association, Zero, has raised serious concerns that, despite investment in improving the nation’s haphazard sanitation systems, the current set up rewards polluters.
 
Zero has been looking at data from 2016, contained in the annual report for water and waste services in Portugal, issued by the Water and Waste Services Regulatory Authority, and found that only 83% of Portugal's households are connected to a sanitation system and that only 73.78% of these dwellings are linked to a pipe-work system that is connected to a wastewater treatment plant.

The fraud involves a division head, an accountant and a treasurer at the council that was made infamous last year as being the centre of fatal forest fires.
