Algarve Socialist Party leader to demand 50% toll charge reduction

11399Luís Graça has been elected leader of the regional Socialist Party in the Algarve, taking over from António Eusébio.

Graça says he promises to make the regional party more lively, "with lots of debates, to get out of his comfort zone and to go and listen to people, civil society, business associations and unions."

Vilamoura World - still looking for buyers three years on

vilamouraThe Vilamoura World Group, the company responsible for the stalled development of land to the west of Vilamoura, is going to  MIPIM real estate fair, from March 13 to 16, in Cannes, to try and get some interest in two sub-developments it intends to start "in April." 

Sales agency CBRE has been trying to sell off the Vilamoura World project, owned by US vulture fund Lone Star, in parcels or as a job lot.

Algarve tourist tax 'only for some council areas'

6237News released at the end of last week by the Algarve’s mayors’ group, AMAL, stated that the vote to start the process to introduce a regional tourist tax was approved ‘unanimously’ - which turns out not to be strictly correct.
 
The mayor of Silves, Rosa Palma, was unable to attend the AMAL meeting on March 9th but had emailed her tourist tax views prior to the meeting.

Anti-torture committee urges Portugal to tackle police ill-treatment of prisoners

6251In a report on Portugal published today, the Council of Europe's anti-torture committee urges the Portuguese authorities to take determined action to prevent police ill-treatment and to provide prisoners with safe and decent living conditions.


During its 2016 periodic visit to the country, the CPT’s delegation received a considerable number of credible allegations of ill-treatment at the time of apprehension and during police custody. 

MPs confused over EDP's 0.7% corporation tax rate

edpPylonA row has broken out over the amount of tax EDP paid in 2017, with the Socialist parliamentary leader asking the Government to clarify whether the effective tax rate paid was really just 0.7% and, if so, whether measures are planned for greater tax justice.
 
In a letter sent to the Ministry of Finance, Socialist MPs asked whether the government will confirm the news published in Espresso stating that EDP paid only 0.7% in Corporate Income Tax (IRC) in 2017, the lowest rate of any company listed on the Portuguese stock exchange.

High winds damage rainswept Algarve

rainstormRain, thunderstorm and strong winds associated with storm Felix were felt throughout the Algarve this Saturday with the weather station in Carvoeiro confirming a maximum speed of 122 kmph, 75mph in old money.
 
The wind was at its greatest during early evening on Saturday - between 18:00 and 20:00 – leaving a trail of damage including fallen trees, signage, flooding and power cuts.

Poisonous 'Portuguese Men o'War' washed up on Algarve beaches

JellyfishPortugueseMOWarThere is a poison jellyfish alert in place along the Algarve’s coastline, especially at eastern beaches where ‘Portuguese men’o war’ are being washed ashore after the tumultuous sea conditions of recent days.
 
From this Saturday, March 10, the Maritime Authority says that walkers on many of the Algarve’s beaches should beware as the creatures are dangerous. Monte Gordo and Manta Rota are affected in the east, as are Meia Praia and Alvor in the west. 

Storm damage to Algarve farms totals €3.6 million

GreenhousedamageThe Minister of Agriculture said on Saturday that the damage to the 60 Algarve farms caught up in last week’s bad weather, would cost  €3.6 million to rectify.
 
The survey after the bad weather on March 4, was carried out last week by regional technicians from the ministry run by Minister Luís Capoulas Santos.
