Portugal signs deal with Mozambique to boost shipping and ports

ship3In a bid to boost investment and strengthen bilateral relations, Portugal and Mozambique have signed a memorandum of understanding on maritime and port transport.

Portugal’s Minster of the Sea, Ana Paula Vitorino, joined the Minister of Transport and Communications of the Republic of Mozambique, Carlos Fortes Mesquita, in a signing ceremony in Oporto at which she said training will be increased and technology will be shared, such as the coastal maritime traffic system used by Portugal.

The summertime boost in the INEM's ability to respond swiftly to accidents is a welcome relief for the existing 37 emergency medical teams, available 24/7 but always under pressure at this time of year due to the increase in accidents on and off the road during the tourist season.

'In defence of women's rights' - Spain's El País ditches 'contact' classified ads

stockingsOne of Spain’s top newspapers, El País, is to stop publishing classified ads for sexual services, acknowledging that the majority of women who offer sexual services are being enslaved.

Since July 15th, the newspaper has not published a single ‘contact’ ad, a decision based on the "defence of women's rights."

Former TAP boss charged in €25 million Angolan money-laundering scam

tap2Portugal’s public prosecution service has accused seven people of involvement in corruption, money laundering and document forgery to turn money from the Angolan national oil company into classy Portuguese real estate.

Among the suspects is the former TAP administrator Fernando Sobral and José Santos, Vítor Pinto e Pedro Pedroso as well as João Gomes Correia, Miguel Alves Coelho and Ana Paula Reais who acted as intermediaries in the complex money laundering scheme.

Poland plans to scrap Bilateral Investment Treaty with Portugal

containersOn 18 July 2017 the Polish Council of Ministers submitted a draft proposal to parliament allowing the President to unilaterally terminate the current agreement on the promotion and reciprocal protection of investments, signed between Poland and Portugal on 11 March 1993 (Poland-Portugal BIT).

The Poland-Portugal BIT establishes the terms and conditions for private investment by nationals and companies of Poland in Portugal and vice versa.

The BIT contains a Most Favoured Nation clause (i.e. foreign investors from one contracting state may not be treated less favourably than investors from other states) and protects foreign investors against unlawful expropriation (direct and indirect).
