Lorry driver dead and nine injured in train crash at level crossing

The accident occurred on the northern line in the Santarém Valley which was blocked in both directions.

Imported Italian rubbish held in quarantine

landfill2A deal to bury the first shipment of 20,000 tons of Italian rubbish in a Portuguese landfill site has run into trouble not only with horrified environmentalists but with Portugal’s Integrated Center for the Treatment of Industrial Waste (CITRI) which has quarantined the waste until it can be established exactly what it consists of.

The Portuguese Environment Agency decided that the first of many shipments was perfectly OK as the Italians said there was 'nothing hazardous in the rubbish' but CITRI wants to be sure that the Italians are not dumping toxic waste on Portugal’s doorstep.  

Barroso blames Goldman Sachs job controversy on European 'anti-US hostility'

barrosoThe European Commission President, José Manuel Barroso, said that the controversy whipped up over his Goldman Sachs job just showed anti-US hostility within Europe.

Barroso chaired the European Commission from 2004 until 2014 and, after a legally necessary rest period, took the highly paid post as Chairman of Goldman Sachs International in July this year, thus creating a huge backlash, not least from EU staff who mounted a petition that gathered 150,000 signatures demanding immediate measures against the revolving door in Brussels between political jobs and the corporate sector.

Portuguese consumers rein in spending

The drop was due to fewer purchases being made of non-food products, such as clothing, electrical goods, furniture, computer equipment and books.

Ministerial befuddlement over EN125 re-start date

en125postThe Minister of Planning and Infrastructure, Pedro Marques, said today in parliament that the Algarve’s EN125 upgrade works “will be completed by the summer.”

Asked about the delay in finishing the job, Pedro Marques said that the EN125 roadworks, suspended since mid-June, should be resumed "at the end of this year or early 2017..."

Coca-Cola to suspend €40 million Portuguese investment unless sugar tax is 'amended'

cocacolaThe Iberian division of Coca-Cola European has suspended a planned €40 million investment in its Setúbal plant unless the government scraps the proposed ‘sugar tax’ on soft drinks.

Andrés Curbelo, the head of Coca-Cola in Portugal is confident the tax that is included in the draft 2017 State Budget will be amended and talks of the ‘social impact’ if it is not.

Inquiry launched into VRSA's €100 million planning disaster
