Exploding ATM rocks Albufeira neighbourhood

atmThe neighbourhood of Vale Mangude, Albufeira, rocked with the explosion of an ATM at a supermarket this morning which destroyed the machine and blew out the shop window.

Thieves had filled the cash machine with gas and set light to a fuse which ignited the mixture, causing the machine's almost total destruction.

Last May, in statements to Rolling Stone magazine, lead singer Steven Tyler stated that the Aerosmith would probably embark on one final tour: "There are two bands that still have the original members, us and the Rolling Stones. We’ll do a farewell tour or go to the studio and record a new album, I'm very enthusiastic about it."

Forte de Peniche withdrawn from Revive programme due to 'respect for the struggle'

salazarportraitThe Minister of Culture has had a sensible rethink on including the Forte de Peniche in his list of public buildings to be leased for tourism purposes in the government's Revive programme.

Luís Castro Mendes justified the removal of the fort from the list by saying it is necessary to "respect and to perpetuate the memory of the struggle for democracy."

The fort served as a prison for the Estado Novo (between 1934 and 1974), where the opponents of the Salazar (pictured) regime were sent, mostly being members of the Portuguese Communist Party (PCP).
