Banking heavyweight says Caixa Geral impasse is damaging the industry

caixageral2Faria de Oliveira, president of the Portuguese Association of Banks, says the continuing impasse with Caixa Geral de Depósitos (CGD) directors refusing to hand in their income and asset statements to the Constitutional Court, “is very negative for Caixa and for the sector."

The APB president added that it is urgent to end this situation at Caixa and also expressed confidence that a solution for Novo Banco will be found by the end of the year.

Portugal's Hotel Association to launch new reservations website

MORGADOGOLFPortugal’s Hotel Association (AHP) is to launch an online booking platform for the country's hotels as this has been identified as the way people like to make reservations.

This international trend has been spotted, albeit rather late, by the hoteliers association which now has applied for community funds to develop and launch the new site which aims to aggregate all Portugal’s hotels into one new super website.

Constitutional Cout judges flout income and asset statement rules

Both therefore have failed to fulfill their obligations as judges in the State’s employ yet currently are deciding whether the Board of Directors of Caixa Geral de Depósitos should or should not have to submit income and asset statements.

Albufeira Roma families to be 'temporaily re-housed' after 20 years in tents

gypsycartA group of Roma families that has been living in tents for over twenty years in the Orada area of Albufeira are to be housed, albeit  temporarily, in prefabricated houses in Escarpão.

Albufeira council, along with the local Santa Casa da Misericórdia, said that eight families will benefit from the move, a total of 39 people. One of the benefits is that those applying for minimum guaranteed income payments (RMG) need to have a fixed abode, rather than a flapping tent, with which to register.

Loulé cement plant standstill 'worries' the government

cimporPortugal’s Economy Minister, Manuel Caldeira Cabral, said today that he is monitoring the situation at the Cimpor cement plant in Loulé which temporarily has suspended production.

On June 9 this year, Cimpor’s management suspended workers’ contracts at the Loulé plant, one of the three remaining cement plants in Portugal.

PM says Portugal can look forward to 2017 with 'confidence and calm'

antoniocostaPrime Minister António Costa said today that Portugal can face next year with "confidence and without fear," after Brussels decided not to submit a proposal for the suspension of EU funds and gave the 2017 Budget a green light.

Costa was speaking to journalists in Casablanca, having heard the European Commission had decided that due to the "effective action" carried out by Portugal’s government, the excessive deficit procedure should be suspended and the country should hit the budget deficit target of under 3% this year.
