Vila do Bispo council diggers endanger 'one of Portugal's geological gems'

fossilbeachA rare cliff showing unique geological strata created more than 250 million years ago may be at risk after council works near Praia do Telheiro beach in Vila do Bospo.

A path leading to the cliff top has been bulldozed to make it easier for vehicles to get to the beach area. Internationally known Portuguese geologist Galopim de Carvalho is horrified that this work will affect this geological gem as stones and rocks have been pushed to one side and clumps of greenery destroyed to widen the access. 

Basque terrorist group 'decapitated'

etaTwo leaders of ETA, a separatist militant group in the Basque region, have been arrested in a village in France.

The arrests of David Pla, 40, and Iratxe Sorzábal, 43, "completes the decapitation of Eta", minister Jorge Fernandez Diaz told reporters.

Novo Banco worth less and less as time goes on

In today's commentary the Moody's analyst Pepa Mori writes that "the postponement of the sale of the New Bank has a negative influence on the credit rating for the institution because the suspension of the sale operation introduces the risk of delaying key decisions such as the implementation of restructuring measures that would improve the already very weak credit profile of the bank ."

Separatists in Catalonia given warnings ahead of vote

4794Anyone independently minded in Catalonia has been warned that the area will be automatically kicked out of the eurozone if voters choose independence for the region.

Catalonia goes to the polls on Sunday, much against the wishes of Madrid. The election is not about independence per se, but has been framed as such.

Two German women found living in Cyprus airport

cyprusA German mother and her daughter have been discovered living at Larnaca Airport in Cyprus for the last 15 months.

They were deported from Israel after their visas expired. It is believed they have relatives in Israel to which they would like to return but their status is not clear.
