italianprisonCape Verdean national Valter Nunes has been arrested in connection with last week’s murder of António Guimarães, a bouncer at the Second Bar in Avenida Sá Carneiro, Oura, Albufeira at 02.55 in the monring.  

Nunes appeared in Albufeira court yesterday having been released from hospital after a week's recovery and later was remanded in custody.

EU might ban small electrical appliances

dysondc04As many as 30 different electrical appliances could be outlawed in the EU because of the high-wattage required to power them.

A ban is already coming into force on vacuum cleaners which use a great deal of electricity. With effect on Monday, vacuums for sale in Britain may not have a motor operating at more than 1,600 watts.

Lidl marches ahead with growth plans

It announced an investment of £20m for a marketing campaign it is calling LidlSurprises, the first national marketing initiative it has undertaken in Britain.

France mulls over its 35-hour week

baguetteFrance is considering whether to end its 35-hour working week which was instituted in the flush days of 2000.

The country´s new economy minister, Emmanuel Macron, said the government could authorise companies to waive the rules around working hours and pay. The statement came after Mr Macron had been in post for just two days.

Loulé to spend €500,000 on projects voted for by locals

All Loulé's citizens can review the various project proposals and choose which ones they want, all as part of the first Participatory Budgeting scheme being run by the municipality.

Fnac to open in Faro

fnacstoreThe French electronic goods and book retailer is adding three more stores to its chain in Portugal with Faro joining Oeiras and Setúbal.

The three new stores will be between 900m2 and 1,600m2 building on the medium size format that gives optimum profitability.

'Unnecessary' investment agreed for Faro docks

ship3“Redevelopment works are not necessary for expansion" at Faro docks, according to comments from José Pedro Soares from the Sines and Algarve Port Authority on August 13.

The very next day the same Port Authority signed an agreement to invest €3.2 million on dredging at Faro docks which it had just claimed was not necessary.

Foreign motorway toll dodgers face court

tollsDrivers of foreign plated vehicles using Portugal's motorway network who have failed to pay for the privilege have been warned to pay the tolls of face a debt collection system that supposedly now stretches across national borders.

Approximately 300,000 drivers resident in Spain have dodged paying for their motorway journeys on visits to Portugal since 2009 and now owe €11 million  - across Europe the total can only be guessed at as the concessionaire companies have not admitted that the current multiple systems for payments has caused mass toll evasion.
