Silves history - WWI combatants listed in new exhibition

ww1Pictures and records of those former residents of Silves municipality who fought for the Allies during World War I, (which for Portugal ran from 1916 to 1918) are being recognised in an exhibition in the old casino in Armação de Pêra.

Men from the Portuguese Expeditionary Corps (CEP) are noted in, ‘The Combatants of the Municipality of Silves in World War I.’

Prudent Portugal saves €1.9 billion interest on IMF loan

imfA total saving of €1.9 billion was presented on Tuesday by the president of the IGCP, the Agência de Gestão da Tesouraria e da Dívida Pública which manages Portugal’s national debt and bond issues.

Ria Formosa - sunken dredger removed from the seabed

The ‘Camião’ sunk on June 5th and had been lying 30 metres below the waves ever since.

Seven charged over 2017 Cessna beach deaths

cessna152Seven people have been charged in relation to the death of two people, one an eight-year-old girl, when a light aircraft landed on the beach at Costa da Caparica, on the western coast of the district of Setúbal.

The fatal accident on August 2, 2017, was the result in an engine fault. Instead of landing in the sea, the pilot brough the aircraft down on the beach, with devastating effect.

Canadian falls from cliff at remote beauty spot in Lagoa

INEM125A Canadian has been hospitalised after falling 20 metres off a cliff at a remote beach in the Lagoa area.

The man fell at Afurada beach, a beach without access by land, so was rescued by the lifeboat team from Ferragudo and aided by lifeguards from a nerarby beach.

Quercus and Évora Council call for mineral exploration ban

riotintoA company based in the United Arab Emirates, Exchange Minerals Ltd, has made a formal request to mine on Portuguese soil.

The request was made to excavate for minerals such as gold, copper, silver, and zinc, across a total area of four hundred and ten square kilometres. The Left Bloc (BE) party has already come forward against the prospect of such development, basing such opposition mainly on environmental grounds.
