Moncarapacho - Monterosa oilve oil wins top US award

olivesMoncarapacho's Monterosa extra virgin olive oil has won two gold medals at the New York International Olive Oil Competition on April 27th, the most prestigious category: one with the monovarietal Monterosa Picual and the other with Monterosa Selection.

At the start of the week, the Algarve brand won a gold medal with the Monterosa Picual monovarietal in the Japan Olive Oil Competition and two silver medals with the Monterosa Maçanilha monovarietal and the Monterosa Selection.

Portugal's unemployment below 10% for the first time since 2009

joblessAccording to the Labour Minister, Vieira da Silva, the end of March unemployment statistics represent "a moment of great significance" as the headline rate drops below the 10% mark for the first time since 2009.

The minister said today that the unemployment rate had fallen to 9.9%, due to “a job creation dynamic that many considered impossible".

Hashish bales just drifting along the Algarve coastline

hashishbundleThe Algarve coast again has been blessed with the arrival of free bales of hashish, securely packaged and drifting near beaches at Aljezur and Vila do Bispo.

The Sines department of the Coastal Control Unit of the GNR has secured a total of 151 kilograms of hashish that arrived on Tuesday and Wednesday this week, packed in four bales.

Ministers called to parliament to explain rigged report on Almaraz nuclear dump

nuclearfuelrodsThe Ministers of the Environment and Foreign Affairs have been called to parliament to explain the rigged report on Spain’s ancient Almaraz nuclear power station - a report that concluded that there was no problem at all with the building of additional facilities for storing nuclear waste next to the Tagus river, even though it then flows through Portugal as the 'Tejo'.

The demand for an urgent hearing came from the Left Bloc, which said today that the government's decision, expressed in the Portuguese Environment Agency report, was seriously unacceptable.
