The group of English, French and German holidaymakers, along with four children, were picnicking at the western side of the beach and simply got cut off.

Cold and wet weekend coming up

New Olhão/Faro sewage treatment works will be ready in 965 days

sewagepipeThe Secretary of State for the Environment wants IKEA to use the waste water from the new Olhão – Faro sewage treatment works for heating and cooling systems and for irrigation of the store’s surrounding green spaces.

None of this is in the plan but Carlos Manuel Martins has used such a system at the treatment plant at Freilas where he was the manager and said the system is useable in the Algarve.

Portugal's population continues to fall despite rise in immigrant numbers

airplane2The number of immigrants to Portugal obtaining residence permits in 2015 has risen with 37,851 permits issued, 2,586 more than in 2014.

The National Statistics Institute (INE) released figures obtained from the Foreigners and Borders Service which showed that Brazilians led the field with 5,716 permits issued, followed by the Chinese with 2,575, Romanians with 2,569, French with 2,495 and Cape Verdeans with 2,025.

Barroso avoids EC censure over his new job at Goldman Sachs

barrosoThe former president of the European Commission, Portugal’s José Manuel Barroso, has been cleared by an internal ethics committee of charges of breaking ‘duties of integrity and discression’ when he joined Goldman Sachs in a move that provoked outrage and petition.  

Despite concluding that Barroso technically was in the clear, the committee members agreed that the former president "had not demonstrated the insight that can be expected from someone who held the position that he held for so many years."

Monteiro gets contract extension to handle Novo Banco sale

novobancoshinylogoSérgio Monteiro has been given three month contract extension to lead the Novo Banco sale process.

The Bank of Portugal already has paid Monteiro €304,000 to front the sale negotiations but the consultant is to stay on until January 2017 even though final offers have to be submitted by November 4th and a decison expected soon thereafter.

Zoomarine 'goes green' to replant trees lots to forest fires

zoomarineZoomarine is funding volunteers to plant 5,800 trees to make up some of the losses resulting from the fires this summer.

Teams are to join "Operation Green Mountain" on November 5th and plant the trees at Herdade do São Bom Homem, Silves.
