Police agree to back off at Faro bikers festival

bikersFaro council, the Faro Motorcycle Club and the police have agreed that any police action at the International Bikers Festival in July will be focused on ‘prevention’ rather than ‘repression,’ according to the mayor today.

Mayor Rogério Bacalhau said this was the main conclusion of a meeting this week which included senior management from the PSP and GNR police forces.

Google stands charged with monopoly abuse

googleEurope’s favourite search engine, Google, has been charged with monopoly abuse because of the way it promotes its shopping comparison service over others.

The charge comes after a five-year probe by the EU and could result in a trial and fines running into the billions.

Portugal's anti-corruption chief concludes that little progress has been made

eurozoneThe chairman of the Council for the Prevention of Corruption, Guilherme d'Oliveira Martins, gave a lecture to schoolchildren in Severim de Faria in Évora this week and concluded that little progress has been made in combating this ‘terrible phenomenon.’

Claiming there is a need for ‘simple and clear laws,’ Martins complained that the current legal system is too complex and actually encourages corruption and that criminal investigators must have available the tools required to take offenders to court and actually get convictions.

'Novo Banco must pay €527 million to BES investors'

besPortugal's stock market regulator, embroiled in a dispute with the Bank of Portugal over which of them should compensate BES investors, today said that its legal department had concluded that ‘good bank’ Novo Banco must stump up the refunds.

The regulator, CMVM, said that those who had bought bonds in BES branches, later to find they had bought shares in failing Grupo Espírito Santo companies,  should be repaid from funds now held at Novo Banco.

Eurozone property prices grew in 2014

The figures, provided by Eurostat, are national and do not break down by regions.

Illegal immigration in Spain soars

Caught last year while attempting to get into Spain illegally were 12,549 people, up from just 7,472 in 2013.

Loulé’s new heliport facilities opened by minister

The new building will allow civil protection and medical emergency services to operate with better facilities and coordination.

New bookings website launched for Algarve hotels
