antoniocosta3In the last full session of parliament before the summer break, Portugal’s Prime Minister, António Costa, informed MPs that his current budget policy remains unchanged, even though his left wing support parties want a boost in public spending prior to the general election in 2019.

“After the summer, we will be preparing the last budget of this legislature and I want to be clear: we will not sacrifice what has been achieved or change the course due to the fact that it's will be less than a year to the election.”

Scientists call for total sardine ban next season

sardinesScientists have gone head-to-head with Portugal and Spain’s fishing fleets by again requesting a zero sardine catch next season.

The International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES) opines that only a total ban on sardine fishing off the Iberian coast will save the species from obliteration.

Novo Banco to close two more Algarve branches in July

The Algarve is to lose branches in Olhos de Agua and São Brás de Alportel with the Beja district losing only one - in Vila Nova de Mil Fontes.

It’s not only current account charges which customers are forced to pay, mortgage arrangement fees also come under the same category of paying for a service that has not taken place.

Thirteen of Tavira's Churches to open this summer

The Churches will be open until the end of August Mondays to Friday, from 10.15 am to 12.20 pm and 2.30 pm to 5.45 pm.

Via do Infante blocked by burning truck

fireA truck caught fire and was destroyed this morning (July 12) on the Via do Infante motorway at Estômbar, near Lagoa.

The vehicle - owned by the recycling company Ambigroup, based in Faro - was carrying wood and emergency services cut off the road while they dealt with the flames.

Barclaycard to stop servicing customers based in Portugal on August 6th

4775Barclaycard users living in Portugal have been given until August 6th to supply a residential address acceptable to the bank or their card will be deactivated.

Barclays has offered no detailed explanation for the move that will wipe thousands of overseas customers from their books by insisting they provide a completed, 'Proof of address verification form.'
