Two firefighters arrested for setting fires

fireforestThe court in Alenquer, just to the north of Lisbon, decided last week that two local firefighters, suspected of setting at least a dozen fires in the area from early last summer, will be held in custody until their court appearance.

The two men, aged 20 and 23, are suspected of causing at least a forest and urban fires, one of which needed assistance from aircraft to put out.

Cabin crew at TAP’s 'Portugália' to strike in July

The 57-year-old was pulled from the water by a Portuguese fellow guest at the Vila Marachique complex.

Airlines to hand passenger data to Portugal's Secret Service

airplane2The government is to allow the Tax Authority, GNR, the Public Security Police, the Maritime Police and the Foreigners & Borders Service to have access to all the information held by airlines on Portuguese and foreign passengers arriving and leaving Portugal.

The legislation will be pushed through under the catch-all ‘fight against terrorism and organised and serious crime,’ but the information will be widely available from a new department of the Secret Service, despite these areas being among the competencies of the Judicial Police.

Alvor acid attacker gets nine years in jail

Edmundo Fonseca, 45, was convicted of the attempted murder of 29-year-old Ellie Chessell (pictured left, before the attack) after it was proved that Fonseca was the attacker.

EC opens in-depth investigation into Madeira Free Zone

euThe European Commission has opened an in-depth investigation to examine whether Portugal has applied the Madeira Free Zone regional aid scheme in conformity with the 2007 and 2013 Commission decisions approving it, reads an EC press release sent to newsrooms on July 6th.

In particular, the Commission has concerns that tax exemptions granted by Portugal to companies established in the Madeira Free Zone are not in line with the Commission decisions and EU State aid rules.
