Scotland names its independence date

scotlandThe government in Scotland has named 24 March 2016 as the date on which the country could be independent.

The date is contained in a White Paper from the Scottish government.

Renewed attempt to clone extinct animal

dnaAttempts will be made to see if an extinct mountain goat can be cloned from preserved cells.

The bucardo, or Pyrenean ibex, died out in 2000, but cells were taken from the last known female in 1999 and frozen in liquid nitrogen.

Global diving conference comes to Portimão

navyship3The Portimão Arena is hosting the Global Underwater Explorers conference on the 7th and 8th of December, the largest gathering for underwater tourism worldwide.

The first GUE event took place in 2011 in the German city of Kiel, with about five hundred participants from around the world from 20 different countries.

The event received wide media coverage, both in the specialised diving press and in the promotion of various diving destinations.

Portimão council demands dismissal of the head of the Algarve’s hospitals

barlaventohospitalThe Portimão municipal assembly passed a motion of censure on the conduct of the President of the Hospitals of the Algarve (CHA) and called for the resignation of Pedro Nunes, according to the Left Bloc which put the motion forward.

The council claims that Pedro Nunes is responsible for the degradation of the National Health Service in the Algarve, with particular damage having been done to patients in the western Algarve and at the Barlavento Hospital in Portimão.

GNR nab thieves after high speed chase in Sagres

gnrpatrolThe GNR chased and arrested two men suspected of theft from a car parked in Sagres and who took off at high speed in a vain attempt to outrun the police.

The men, 59 and 26, have already been in court in Lagos accused of  "stealing from the interior of a vehicle and attempting to outrun a police officer," according to Faro Command.

Staff strike at Portugal's airports has 100% support

airplaneThe strike by the border control inspectors from the Aliens and Borders Service (SEF) said on Sunday that all categories of staff had been on strike at Lisbon, Oporto, Faro and Madeira airports.

At airports were guaranteed the legal minimum of services and delays of up to 2 hours have been the norm for departures of international flights.

Portuguese president refers pension cuts to the Constitutional Court

The initial proposal from the Government aimed at savings of €728 million as laid out in the State Budget for 2014.
