Algarve wins European award for gastronomy

foodfrenchDays after a damning report into Portugal’s lack of nutritional knowledge and sharp criticism of the general diet consumed by the public, (HERE) the Algarve has just won a European prize for its gastronomy.

The award for the ‘Best European Region in Tourism and Gastronomy 2018,’ was given by the European Council of Food and Wine Confraternities (CEUCO) in the 13th round of AURUM Awards, this year held in Athens.

Uranium mining project 'close to the border' rejected by Spanish government

spanishflagThe Spanish government confirmed on Monday that it has abandoned a uranium mine project at Alameda de Gardón in Salamanca, close to the border with Portugal, as the developer did not provide the necessary documentation to proceed.

Last weekend’s demonstration against the opening of the uranium mine saw 2,000 people in opposition to the project put forward by Berkley Energia, which claimed local support.

Warm weather yields to polar air bringing snow to high ground

The Algarve is due to escape the worst of a blast of polar air heading south over the next few days, bringing freezing temperatures to high ground in central and northern Portugal and snow predicted for the Serra da Estrela.

Tavira bridge - work should be competed early in 2019

Work on the EN125 bridge should be completed between the end of January and the beginning of February next year.

Eastern section EN125 pressure group called to Lisbon to explain

EN125RoadSurfaceThe eastern EN125 citizens’ movement will be explaining its position on Wednesday when representatives travel to Lisbon to a meeting of the Parliamentary Committee on Economy, Innovation and Public Works.

The hearing was triggered by a PSD complaint back in April that the EN125 eastern section, between Olhão and Vila Real de Santo António, was in a dangerously poor state of repair.

Tourist Tax - Loulé Council has '€70 million in the bank and still wants more'

The Social Democratic Party opposition in Loulé says that "the Council has more than €70 million in the bank, hence has funds to meet all the needs of the county," i.e. there is no need to rake in more money through a Tourist Tax.
