Three to stand trial for Albufeira street murder

justiceFaro’s Public Prosecutor's Office has filed murder charges against the three men who kicked a young father to death in Albufeira last September.
 
Paulo Santos, the father of a four-year-old son, was set upon in Rua Infante Dom Henrique at around 6pm on September 3rd last year, after he had stopped for a snack at a fast-food stand.

Man sets fire to Portuguese Embassy in Stockholm

EmbassyStockholmPolice in Sweden say have arrested a man his 50s who is suspected of the arson attack on the Portuguese Embassy in Stockholm.
 
A large fire broke out shortly before noon on Wednesday a building that houses the Portuguese, Argentine, Belgian and Tunisian embassies.

Tagus sludge operation - ecological land requisitioned for dump zone

TejoFoamThe Ministry of the Environment is taking possession of protected land on which to dump pulp industry sludge that will be dredged up from the riverbed of the Tagus.
 
The Ministry will pay compensation of more than €37,000 to the land owner who is not at all happy with the use to which his property is to be put.

Council vets killed 12,000 stray cats and dogs last year

The government is launching a campaign on Wednesday to support the sterilisation of homeless pets and is stumping up €500,000 for local councils with municipal collection centres, to comply with what now is a legal obligation.

Barclays forecast pushes CTT shares even lower

cttvanBarclays has decided to cut its share price prediction for Portugal’s struggling post office business from €3.80 to €3.00, heaping more misery on the company’s shareholders who have seen their investment decline 12.46% this year, 46% in 2017 and 27% in 2016. 
 
CTT shares fell further on the Lisbon stock exchange, in reaction to today’s Barclays downgrade, ending the session down 2.43% at €3.052, the lowest price since November 29, 2017.

Finance Minister can not explain Novo Banco losses

novobancoshinylogoNovo Banco’s declared 2017 losses of €1.4 billion have been discussed in parliament, with the Minister of finance admitting he does not yet have "enough information, beyond what is known" to explain what went on.
 
Normally on-the-ball Minister Mário Centeno acknowledged in parliament that it is "necessary to determine the rationale for this intervention," referring to the additional €792 million that the Resolution Fund now has to inject into the ailing bank to strengthen its capital ratios.

Government to scrap EDP 'power guarantee' payment

Unemployment drops to 7.8%, the lowest since 2004

unemployedThe National Statistics Institute confirmed on Tuesday that the end of January unemployment rate was 7.9%, the lowest since July 2004.
 
A year earlier, in January 2017, the unemployment rate was 10.1%, according to the Institute.
