Customs Authority demands €8,000 for van donated to Tavira charity

disabledA van specially adapted to transport those disabled or handicapped was donated by Rotarians in France to a registered charitable foundation in the Algarve.

The nine-seater van has a wheelchair lift platform at the rear and was destined to make lives easier in the Tavira area for those with disabilities such as Down’s Syndrome and other physical and mental handicaps as well as many less than mobile elderly.

Great roads, great views, great weather and great ASB ride!

Algarve Senior BikersASB organiser David Shirley was assisted by regular rider Steve Wills in leading the Algarve Senior Bikers' most recent ride from Silves via the Odalouca Dam, Alferce and down the steep twisty road through the Brejo valley, for a coffee break near Monchique. 

The ride should have taken place on the 9th of May but was postponed due to the recent stormy weather.

A Cultural Pioneer of the Algarve turns 25 years

HELGA HAMPTON; PAUL CROSSLEYThe Amigos de Música celebrated their 25th Anniversary on Thursday, April 28th. 2016. A group of members and guests gathered in the late evening sunshine at Os Agostos for a pre-concert champagne reception.

Before the concert Amigo President Helga Hampton welcomed all those present. She proudly summarised the various achievements of the Amigos over the past quarter century. During this time the Amigos de Música has basically tried to stimulate the early cultural awakening of the developing Algarve with wonderful music played by world class artists.

The AAA membership is vibrant and open for new members to join.

Algarve Senior Bikers on the rough and the smoothTwenty four members attended the ASB ride on the 6th of April, which ended with lunch at the Restaurant O Cyclista on the riverside at Tavira.
The group arrived after meeting in Sao Bras de Alportel and a superb scenic ride through the remote hills of the eastern Algarve. A stop was made for coffee under the vines at the cafe in the centre of the pretty village of Cachopo.

The Annual Algarve Rotary Schools Cookery competitionThe Annual Algarve Rotary Schools Cookery competition was won this year by Escola EB2,3 Dr. António de Sousa Agostinho in Almancil. The competition organised by the Rotary Clubs of Almancil and Silves, drew competitors from Agrupamento de Escolas de Silves Sul, Escola Secundária, Dra. Laura Ayres, Quarteira and Escola EB2,3 Dr. António de Sousa Agostinho Almancil who between them entered 12 teams, producing eighteen three course lunches from which the ten judges chose two schools to cook in the final; a team from the school in Almancil and the other from the Quarteira School.

ASB Members brave the cold in the hillsGrey skies, cold winds and the threat of a sudden shower did not stop 28 riders taking part in the first ride of 2016.

Group organiser David Shirley led the ride up into the hills to Malhão, above Salir, where a stop was made to take in the views and a warming coffee.

Algarve Burns Supper

Algarve Burns SupperThe Saint Andrew’s Society of the Algarve held their Burns Supper at the Ponte Romana restaurant in Silves on Saturday 23 January. According to Society Chieftain Doug McAdam “The Supper was a resounding success with almost a full house of 125 participants. We were particularly delighted on this occasion to be joined by British Ambassador Kirsty Hayes and her husband Peter”.
