Alex Lowes and Eugene Laverty the fastest in the Superbike trials at Portimão

Alex LowesYesterday saw the end of the five-day trials for the World Championship Superbike and Supersport at the Autódromo Internacional do Algarve.

The tests were dogged by unstable weather but nothing got in the way of the performance of the teams and drivers with Alex Lowes (Suzuki GSX-R1000 K14), the WSB rookie, fastest on the Autodrome track with a time of 1:42.5 closely followed by teammate Eugene Laverty with 1:42.6.

Algarve Pirates win season opener

Algarve Pirates - American FootballThe region’s only American Football team, the Algarve Pirates, began their 2014 campaign with a hard fought win over the Lisbon Devils on Saturday evening in Mexilhoeira Grande, near Portimão. Both teams wanted to get their season off to a good start and the Defensive play was strong and hard fought and at half time the game was still tied at 0-0, testament to the strength of both teams’ Defensive play. There were chances to score for both teams, but some excellent tackling and unnecessary penalties meant neither side troubled the scorers for the first 30 minutes of play.

Quinta do Lago course undergoing major refurbishment

Quinta do LagoQuinta do Lago has unveiled plans for a major renovation of its North Course to match the other first-class golfing facilities at the prestigious resort in Portugal’s Algarve.

Work will begin this month (Nov) and the course is scheduled to re-open in October 2014, with the new plans designed by renowned American golf architect Beau Welling in collaboration with European Ryder Cup captain Paul McGinley.

American- Style Football Team - now hosting tryouts

Algarve Pirates - American FootballOur American-style Football team in the Algarve, The Algarve Pirates, has resumed practices every Tuesday and Thursday evening as well as Saturday mornings in Mexilhoeira Grande, just west of Portimão. They are preparing for their second season in the Portuguese League.
Open to ages 16 and up (most players range in age from 20 – 40 yrs of age) anyone who thinks they would like to experience the sport is encouraged to come out.

Almost a year to the day since the untimely death of Algarve businessman Jonathon Wickham in a parachute accident at the Portimão aerodrome, a woman has died at the same location.

Paul Ince brings Blackpool FC to Amendoeira Golf Resort

Paul Ince at AmendoeiraManager of Blackpool FC, Paul Ince, brought his squad to the Algarve for pre-season training between 23rd and 30th June, and chose the Amendoeira Golf Resort as the venue.

Ince was preparing his side for their first game of the new season, which is against Doncaster Rovers on Saturday 3rd August, and he was delighted with the facilities on offer at the on-site Amendoeira Sports Club.

Algarve Pirates Host American Football Extravaganza and begin Youth League

Algarve PiratesThe Algarve Pirates American Football team will play their last home game of the regular season on Sunday 24th March at Mexilhoeira Grande, at 3 pm, and will dedicate the game to the memory of their Head Coach, Llew Gittens, who sadly passed away on 12th March after losing his battle with cancer. 

Coach Llew, as he was known to all associated with the team, was not only instrumental in establishing the Pirates as a football team but also inspired the players, who had never before been exposed to the disciplines and rigours of the American game. Whilst his person will be missed by the team, his passion for the game is carried on by all who are involved with the Algarve Pirates. 

Algarve Pirates earn respect against Portuguese Champions

Algarve PiratesThe Algarve’s only American Football team, the Algarve Pirates, travelled to Lisbon last weekend to play the current league champion ‘Lisbon Navigators’ in the 4th match of the season, at the University Sports ground.

With the Pirate’s recent victory against the St Iria Wolves still fresh in the memory confidence was high, if expectations remained realistic.
