SEF cracks prostitution network supplying 20 brothels

Court orders were obtained to raid premises in Caldas da Rainha, Cadaval, Santarém, Leiria, Ourém, Nazaré, Évora, Quarteira and Faro.

The country continues to stagnate in the fight against corruption, according to Portugal’s Association for Transparency and Integrity (TIAC), which points out that little has changed in the past six years as the points score has been a stubborn 62 or 63.

Faro fire lights up the nighttime sky

fireA large fire caused local concern as it lit up the evening sky on the eastern edge of Faro this evening.

The blaze started just before 6pm in the canes along the Ria Seco in front of the Quinta da Senhora Menina wedding venue and was visible as far away as Olhão.

Tagus clean-up bill tops €1 million - but "culprits will pay up"

TejoFoamThe Minister of the Environment said today that the bill for cleaning up the pollution in the Tagus river, was between €1 million and  €1.2 million so far, which will be paid out of the Environmental Fund.
 
João Matos Fernandes said the cost of the clean-up, to remove foam and sediment left by the pulp industry, will be recovered from those responsible although he stopped short of naming names as the matter is now under ‘judicial secrecy’ rules, as are the test results from Celtejo, widely thought to be the culprit, at least for the cellulose sediment.
